–Gebura |
Gebura (게부라, Gebula) is the Patron Librarian of the Floor of Language in the Library, and formerly the Sephirot of Lobotomy Corporation's Disciplinary Team. In her original human life, her name was Kali, a legendary Color Fixer under the title of
The Red Mist. She is met after unlocking her Floor, after completing the Reception of
Shi Association.
Gebura has long red hair tied back in an enormous, messy ponytail that reaches down to her thighs, with two fringes framing her face. Her face is slightly scarred, resembling her appearance through the cognition filter at Lobotomy Corporation, and she always has a cigarette in her mouth, stating that it's part of enjoying her new human body. She wears the Patron Librarian uniform, in the form of a red jacket with a high collar, a tie adorned with a glossy red brooch, and maroon leggings with what appears to be loafer shoes.
Gebura's personality is almost the same as in the prequel when she was a Sephirah: straightforward in a way that can come off as rude, but far more calm and cool-headed now that she has accepted her memories from the past, accepting that unrelenting anger will only hurt her fellow Sephirah and having learned to trust them and her assistant librarians, acting as a mentor to them.[1] Along with that, she seems to be more relaxed than before, often taking breaks to nap or as she calls it, "meditating with her eyes closed".
Roland enters the Floor of Language, before he could read out the name of the Patron Librarian, Gebura greets him with a puff of smoke, announcing her name. Roland complained about already having a drunkard downstairs and now a heavy smoker. Gebura said being able to smoke, she should enjoy this body. She then called Roland by his name, revealing that she knows everything since the Library's creation despite being "asleep" all the time (in her words, like having a dream). She then asked about Roland's Fixer job, and denying his proclaim as a Grade 9 Fixer, saying he might have cheated Angela but not her. Roland wonders if they've met before, Gebura told him that she was a fixer in her original life, she declares that Roland was demoted to Grade 9, but Roland still denies her. Gebura finally warns him about having other thoughts in front of her, after getting Roland's answer, she commands Roland to bring her the books arrogantly, causing Roland to taunt her by saying “Who do you think you are!?”, hearing this, Gebura replied simply with "The Red Mist," and left, leaving Roland completely bewildered.
Roland enters Gebura's floor to deliver books, apologizing for his rudeness last time while nervously referring to her as "ma'am" and "Miss Red Mist" multiple times. Gebura, however, tells him to stop with his flattery, as she and Roland are pretty much in the same situation. Doubting a bit, Roland asks if she really is the Red Mist, having heard many stories about her long ago, but never having met her in person since they both worked in opposite sides of the City. She plainly answers that he can believe whatever he wants, the Red Mist being "nothing more than a hollow shell now" in her words. This makes Roland explain himself, saying it feels unreal to be in front of a legendary Fixer. Gebura reminds him that she died protecting her friends in the Outskirts laboratory, later finding herself in Lobotomy Corp with blurred memories, though she waves off that subject to ask Roland where was his zone of activity. He answers that he worked on the East side, seeing as Gebura worked on the West, and also asks her about one of her legends: singlehandedly slaughtering five Proxies of The Index. Gebura scoffs at the sole mention of the syndicate, before correcting him that it was five Proxies and three Messengers, precisely. Roland praises her prowess again, stating he omitted the Messengers to make sure.
Gebura asks Roland if the Backstreets are the same as before, with 10 years having passed since her death in the Outskirts. Roland sarcastically asks if she meant "dirt-poor people killing and stealing from each other, living in constant fear that someone might assault them", adding that only the tools and methods have changed, but it's pretty much the same as ten years ago. Gebura laments that, seeing how she went through the hassle of the Seed of Light project in an effort to change that, only for it to be of no avail, with Roland jokingly mentioning that things have been a bit better since HamHamPangPang opened, adding that he's still mad about ending up in the Library while on his way there.
Gebura recalls her first life, remembering how much she hated the Backstreets, having been born and survived through them. Roland asks which District was she from, replying she lived in District 23 before, something that makes Roland sympathize with her before Gebura dismisses him, stating that she'll sort out the books he brought and that those memories are making her feel like fetching some liquor from Netzach, with Roland asking if she can join her in her errand.
Roland enters Gebura's floor to deliver her books asking about what she's doing, with her dryly replying that she's taking a break with her eyes closed. Roland then leaves the books on their place and says he'd be going away to not disturb her, but Gebura interrupts him to ask which district in the Backstreets is he from. With him answering he comes from District 17 and calling it a decent place, Gebura further asks if he'd also call it hellish. Roland responds saying that no matter how hellish a neighborhood maybe be, people still live there, and any place inhabited is hellish in its own way. Gebura agrees, adding that every corner of the Backstreets has it woes and that "people will be people" in the end. Recalling her past lives, she mentions how she always fought to protect others, even though she rarely managed to protect something flawlessly, before offering Roland a cigarette, with him declining and saying he quit smoking long ago, much to Gebura's surprise.
Gebura also recalls her childhood, mentioning how the part of the Backstreets she grew up in would constantly change, how even though her neighbors didn't have "their hearts in the right place", some adults would be nice to her, even though they'd usually disappear or wind up mutilated in the street next morning. Surprised, Roland remarks that's brutal even for the Backstreets, with District 23 living to its reputation. Gebura explains that was when the turf wars between Syndicates were at their peak, something similar to what was currently happening on L Corp's Nest. Roland praises her ability to survive, mentioning that even adept Fixers would avoid a place like that, with Gebura retorting that it was the only place she had, constantly looking for a way to survive and protect the people around her. She mentions that one can tell a lot about a society from their vocabulary, specifically mentioning how people in the Backstreets speak in a simple and straightforward way, using common words without bothering about specific terminology, with that meaning becoming even more relevant than the original one. Roland agrees, pointing out the Five Fingers and the Sweepers as an example. Gebura also points out that people in the Backstreets strive to gain wealth and power, and how they can't afford to pursue anything more than those two things keeping them alive. Noting the irony on how if they had that power, it'd would only hurt those below them, she calls those victims potential perpetrators that were simply not strong enough.
Gebura tells Roland a story of her childhood, as a seven-year-old Kali. The first thing she remembered was crying in a corner of the Backstreets, surrounded by blood and guts. She was completely alone, without anyone to call a friend, knowing everyone around her would disappear, with most children her age being either abducted by Sweepers or "treated like their toys" and being unable to do anything but watch in silence. By sheer luck, she managed to survive until she was thirteen, observing and observing to survive through her own effort as a way to cherish her luck. She managed to make it to twenty years of age by her own strategies and became a Fixer, swearing she wouldn't stoop down to the level of a Syndicate. With that job, she eventually managed to have a relatively stable life, and thought she could protect her neighbors with the power she had as a Fixer, since they'd often feed her ever since she was a child, that along with being the people she knew for the longest time, they were like a family to her. That gratitude, however, was repaid by them conspiring with other residents of the apartment, breaking into her house and tying her arms and legs while trying to find any money she had. Disillusioned, she could only see them as filthy lumps of greed crawling around her room, the same people she tried to protect. Roland curses at them, along with saying she'd never let them get away, with Gebura answering that even though she was stronger than her neighbors thought and she could snap the ropes binding her at any moment, she chose to wait, naively hoping it'd simply be a misunderstanding or a prank, but hearing them talk about how they'd use her money to move somewhere else hit her with a cold truth. Enraged and in tears, Kali killed her neighbors invading her home, the same people she sought to protect were no different than the Syndicates, resorting to violence once they had any power. A cycle she couldn't stop no matter who she tried to protect.
Roland sympathizes with her, adding that he also struggled thinking what was right and wrong during his early days as a Fixer. When Gebura asks what kind of Fixer he was, Roland simply responds saying he was a "neat and sensible Fixer who rationally handled his work", holding a decent reputation. Gebura is surprised to see that he plummeted to grade 9, but Roland answers that anything can happen in life, even meeting the legendary Fixer Kali, but adds that he went mad and ran amok, making many enemies in the process. Gebura points out that he also went through a lot, being able to see it in his eyes, and even though she isn't the same Kali, a piece of her is still in her, with Roland jokingly adding that she's upright and honest unlike most Fixers.
