Hubert (휴버트, Hyubeoteu) is a Proxy of The Index. He first appears in the same Chapter, Episode 1.

Appearance

Hubert is an imposing man with short black hair and dark eyes. He wears the uniform of the Index Proxies, consisting of a long white coat embellished with a gold collar and fastener, on top of a black suit with golden accents. Additionally, he dons a metal mask that covers his nose and mouth. He has a vertical scar over his left eye.

Hubert wears golden gauntlets that appear to change shape to suit combat, as shown by his combat pages 'Somber Procuration' and 'Decapitation'.

Personality

Hubert is one of the more quiet Proxies, following the Prescript with no resistance and completing each job to the agreed consensus of Gloria and Esther. He follows the prescript to its description, but counters action when the Prescript has been followed, as noted by Hubert's comment that the Prescript did not specify to bring down the speared bodies the Prescript ordered dead, as asked by the Blue Reverberation. Like Esther, he does not show anger at his co-worker's betrayal, and reminds Gloria that what matters is that the Prescript is followed.

Story

After carrying out a Prescript that ordered the removal of limbs and skewering of a group of Thumb members, Hubert, Esther and Gloria are confronted by the Blue Reverberation, who requests to take the bodies for his own use, likely to form the army of puppets the Puppeteer uses for the Reverberation Ensemble. Hubert states that they weren't requested to take them down, but Argalia counters that it's a personal request, rather than a question of the Prescript. The Index Proxies are conflicted about giving the Blue Reverberation his way but ultimately allow Argalia to take them, as the Prescript has already been fulfilled and didn't specify that the bodies must remain after the fact.

After this encounter, the next Prescript orders the Proxies to enter the Library, as fabricated by Yan, as an act of rebellion against the Index and its cruel treatment of the people of the City. Gloria is upset by this, but Hubert notes that there is no such thing as betrayal to the Index, only the will of the Prescripts. Ultimately, since this Prescript exists, it's considered legitimate, and the Index Proxies take their invitations to go to the Library.

Hubert’s Page There are a number of ranks within the Index. Proselytes, Messengers, and Proxies are as much as I know. Those who have been chosen by the Prescripts will decide whether to become a Proselyte. If they accept it, they will cover their eyes with a blindfold as they serve the role. The blindfold has little symbolic significance; it’s to teach the Proselyte to follow the Prescripts regardless of what is happening before their eyes. Usually, a group of five to six Proselytes accompany a Proxy, learning the rules of the Index and the role of each rank. If a Proselyte shows a certain level of competence, the Prescripts will assign the role of a Messenger or a Proxy to them. After being promoted, they are given a blade of their own, and they may take off the blindfold. The Prescripts are a predetermined path; there is no point for Proselytes to refuse any. It’s still within their choice to decline the Prescript’s offer. Even though they’re free to quit anytime, no one knows if the Prescripts will allow it. The Prescripts might order Proxies to kill the runaway who abandoned their position, or let it slide, or even give the order to resign first. The Prescripts are truly unpredictable.
