Jae-heon (재헌), otherwise known as The Puppeteer, is a Distortion and a member of The Reverberation Ensemble, taking the role of Second Violin.

Appearance

Jae-Heon whilst disguised, and likely before distorting, is a man with voluminous white hair and yellow eyes. He wears a brown sweater, a tan overcoat, blue jeans and brown shoes.

His true appearance is that of a multifaceted metal head with circular red eyes from various sides. He wears the Reverberation Ensemble's uniform, however he uniquely wears an overcoat version.

Personality

Like all other members of the Ensemble, Jae-heon is sadistic and thinks little of others' lives other than entertainment or means to an end. This is a sentiment that that is more intense towards the wealthy, despising them for their ignorance towards the lives of the people in the Backstreets and blaming them for the death of his son.

Story

Little is known about Jae-heon's past, other than that he used to be a technician. Some time ago, his son died at the hands of an unattended road roller. He attempted to reconstruct his son by molding the bodies of other dead children into a puppet fashioned after him. However, he was tracked down by Roland, who was rampaging after the death of Angelica​, who burned down his workshop after being disgusted at his creation in spite of Jae-heon's pleading.

Some time after this, Jae-heon became a Distortion, though not fully conscious, describing it as "[his] head was brimming with all kinds of thoughts" before meeting Argalia and joining the Reverberation Ensemble.

Had I been busy with an urgent appointment as any other tragic tale should go, your death wouldn’t have felt so miserable. Yeah. I would’ve cried until my tears had run their course, and I would’ve been ready to send you off. It was an ordinary day. The sort of day when there were no meetings or gatherings to attend to after I came home from work. Your body was crushed beyond recognition—I couldn’t have noticed on my own that it wasn’t a random chunk of flesh. They put your remains in a stasis box and sent it to me; that was their gesture of condolence. I’d have refused to believe it was you, if it weren’t for the clothes. I spent hours sitting there in numbed silence, vacantly staring at a lump I couldn’t even dare to hug. A stuffed doll you were carrying, now next to the box, caught my eye. Even though it was shredded and soaked in blood, the cotton filling was still clustered together, as if it remembered the volume of the doll. It seems some cotton remained even after the roller crumpled all the outer fabric. Then for reasons unknown, I brought the other dolls out of your room and cut them up with a pair of scissors. I don’t know what possessed me to cut them into pieces of fabric. There wasn’t even enough to fully cover the doll, so I scraped together the pieces of clothing to sew it back up. With the same, gentle hands that made your doll the first time. The outcome was creepier than what it used to be, but it was the same doll I remembered nonetheless. The appearance didn’t matter. Maybe, just maybe, the same could be said for you? I gazed at the box where you, my son, rested for what would no longer be an eternity. My two hands were once so busy that it was a bother; they had paused for the time, but now they are about to move again—just for you.

Passive Abilities

 Shimmering
At the start of each Scene, exhaust all pages in hand and deck; add new pages to hand. Their Cost becomes 0.
 The Puppeteer
Gives 'Puppet Strings' to his puppets over the first four Scenes.
 Snapped Strings
If a Puppet has no Puppet Strings or is dead, will not use pages to control said Puppet.
 Protective Puppetry
At the start of the Scene, gain Protection and Stagger Protection by the number of Puppets that are alive plus the number of Puppets that have died while under 'Puppet Strings'.
 Nuovo Fabric
Take 1-2 less damage and Stagger damage from attacks.

Passive Abilities

 Shimmering
At the start of each Scene, exhaust all pages in hand and deck; add new pages to hand. Their Cost becomes 0. Does not gain Speed dice from Emotion Level bonuses.
 Entangled Strings
When a die each ally plays rolls the minimum value, reroll it. Activates once per die. At the start of the Scene, a random librarian is inflicted with 2 Bind. At the start of the Scene when 'Straining Strings' is used, all 'Puppet Strings' are removed.
 Unbound Flesh
After death, all librarians gain 1-3 Haste at the start of each Scene, and all of their dice gain +1 Power for the rest of the Act.

Trivia

• Like other Ensemble members, Jae-heon represents a Qliphoth of the Tree of Death, in his case, Adyeschach/Insensitivity due to being a victim of Roland's rampage, but is guilty of the same things he accuses Roland of, such as turning the first class Warp Train passengers into Puppets out of a desire to torture them for perpetuating the suffering in the City with their wealth, but also turning unlucky innocents into Puppets as well just because they were in the wrong place and time. Believes that a higher power manipulates the cycle of suffering, reflecting his abilities of turn people into Puppets for him to sacrifice. Wants to create a world where people are freed from their "strings".
