Dear Guests, this Page is currently undergoing realization. Please bear with us as we fully realize the Page of The Red Mist (reception)!

The Red Mist of the past… Who knew that we’d be facing her in person.

Roland, The Red Mist Episode 1, Pre-Battle

The reception of The Red Mist is the reception of Kali, the Color Fixer with the epithet of "The Red Mist." It is a one-Act reception with three Floors of up to five Librarians available, with some restrictions: all Patron Librarians apart from Roland, Gebura, and Binah are unusable. This is the first reception in which Binah is usable, and clearing it unlocks her for good, as well as a special Key Page which can be equipped by Gebura.

Overview

Story

For a transcript, see The Red Mist Episode 1.

Pre-Battle

The Seed of Light Project team before the Head's raid: The peak of Kali's strength.

After TheBlueReverberationIcon.pngThe Blue Reverberation flees the Library, Angela asks Roland if he recalls the Blue Reverb's desire to find the remnants of the Red Mist. Following that, she proposes a plan to lure the Blue Reverberation back in with a hypothetical book of Kali. Roland asks if Angela intends to book Gebura, and she responds that she would not be so heartless. Instead, as enough remnants of the Red Mist remain, she is able to create a simulacrum of Kali out of the Light and invite her. Angela clarifies that this simulacrum cannot exist outside of the Library. She also decides that most of the Patron Librarians, being former members of the Seed of Light Project, cannot be allowed to fight Kali. Their emotional connection would be too hard for both sides. Roland is excited but nervous at the prospect of facing the Red Mist.

When the simulated Kali shows up at the Library's entrance, she is initially confused and hostile, believing the Library and its director to be a malevolent group or even a Wing seeking to ruin the Seed of Light Project. After being offered the key to help the research team acquire Cogito in exchange for answering a few questions, Kali reluctantly complies with the director's request. Angela inquires on the current state of the Old Laboratory, where she verifies that the recruitment of Ayin, Elijah, Gabriel, Michelle, Giovanni, Daniel, and Benjamin had taken place, and that Enoch had recently died. Angela pinpoints this time as the time when the Red Mist was still "writing her own legend" and Carmen was in a poor emotional state amidst the numerous research setbacks. Following this, she starts analyzing the mounting resentment against Carmen at that moment, at which point Kali gets agitated.

Angela apologizes and instead asks Kali why she chose to assist the Seed of Light Project so selflessly. Angela says that she initially thought Kali was "pathetic" for aiding a project she would not gain any personal benefit from. However, she's since reconsidered and believes she should hear the Red Mist's motivations from her own mouth.

Kali reaffirms that she was willing to go through this much because of her genuine belief in Carmen, and that she'd assist the research team in any way she could with the strength she had. She states that she is willing to die to see the project to completion. With that, Angela lets her in, explaining the trial she is to face in the coming reception. Kali remarks that she prefers the method of the reception, believing that it is a clean challenge with no loose ends and no questions asked. She is willing to trust Angela, but warns that if the director is lying, she will be back with a vengeance. Angela praises Kali's unexpected composure and lets her enter.

Post-Battle

After the reception, Roland asks Angela about Kali's E.G.O. weapon and armor. They discuss the potential of E.G.O to overturn the power hierarchy of the City, to which Angela replies that not everyone can wield E.G.O. as powerfully as Kali could. They also talk about its distinction yet similarities to the Distortion, and finally the requirements to manifesting it, that being, the possession of a sincere desire.

Formation

Stageplay

Kali's prowess as the Red Mist is shown in gameplay via her passives, and she is incentivized to do as much damage in a Scene as possible. She gains a Counter die which defends against the first one-sided attack she receives per Scene. She also has access to "Greater Split: Vertical," a heavy-hitting single-strike Combat Page.

E.G.O. Manifestation

Once Kali is brought down to 350 HP in a Scene, her health will not go down any further for that Scene. The next Scene, she will manifest the E.G.O. of the Red Mist and gain the E.G.O. Manifested.pngE.G.O. Manifested status effect and a different appearance (her E.G.O. armor). The stage background music will also change to the unique theme of the Red Mist to reflect this. While her E.G.O. is manifested, Kali gains additional boosts to damage output. She gets a flat +2 Power buff, with an additional Power buff each time she kills a Librarian (total stack represented by the TheRedMistStatusIcon.pngRed Mist effect). She also gains access to "Greater Split: Horizontal," a Mass Attack Combat Page (The Passive Ability uses the wrong name for this Combat Page). However, she also gains one major weakness: if she does less than 40 damage in a Scene, she will lose 40% of her StaggerIcon.pngStagger Resist and will lose her E.G.O. buffs upon being Staggered. If she is not defeated in three Scenes after losing her E.G.O, she will regain her E.G.O. the following Scene.

After manifesting E.G.O., Kali gains the following passive:

SkillOrangeIcon.png The Red Mist
All dice gain +2 Power.
Can use 'Great Split: Horizontal'.
Each Scene, resistances against a random type become "Normal" while the rest are set to "Endured".
For every enemy defeated, gain a stack of 'Red Mist', which boosts the Power of all dice.
If the character fails to deal 40+ damage with attacks within a Scene, take Stagger damage equal to 40% of the Max. Stagger Resist.
Lose 'E.G.O Manifested' status upon becoming Staggered.

Enemy Units

Kali
Before the first Scene, Kali's max hand size is increased from 8 to 14. She also exhausts all Combat Pages in the pre-start deck for a new deck:
  • Upstanding Slash ×8, Spear ×8, Level Slash ×8, Onrush ×3, Greater Split: Vertical ×3, and Focus Spirit (*).

After her deck is created, she draws five Combat Pages for the first Scene, and draws two per Scene for all following Scenes, as per the passive ability Kali. Similarly, she will regenerate 2 Light per Scene.
(*) This is a bug. Kali is intended to gain four copies of Focus Spirit in the new deck, but a misplaced line of code causes her to only gain one copy.

Kali's combat dialogue depends on which Floor she is fought on, with special lines for the Floors of Language, Philosophy, and General Works. If she is fought on any of the Floors where the Patron Librarian cannot be used, then the combat dialogue used will come from any of the 3 "proper" Floors (Language, Philosophy, or General Works).

Death

  • …Yeah. That was nothing to scoff at.

Trivia

  • Her title and Color comes from the thick, bloody mist Mimicry creates from torn flesh upon cleaving an opponent, along with the appearance of her E.G.O.[1]
    • This is a reference to Lobotomy Corporation, where employees killed by Nothing There's bipedal form would be minced into a cloud of blood instead of leaving a corpse.
  • The music that plays during when her E.G.O. manifests was originally a draft for the theme of the Floor of Language.[2]

References

  1. Library Of Ruina Art Book Vol. I pg. 392: "Although it couldn't be shown in game, a cloud of blood forms from torn flesh whenever the Red Mist's Mimicry cleaves her opponent. The title was given because of the thick, bloody mist she leaves after battle and the appearance of her E.G.O. armor."
(Developer's Note from director Kim Jihoon)
  2. Library Of Ruina Art Book Vol. I pg. 393: "The music that plays when the Red Mist's E.G.O. is awakened was one of the drafts for the level 1 BGM for the Floor of Language. As soon as I heard the track, I got the feeling that it fits Kali better than it does Gebura, so I kept it safe and waited for the Red Mist update."
