O sorrow, I have ended, you see, by respecting you,
Because I am certain you will never leave me.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
There was a time when I would dismiss my shame and run from it.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
I made up spurious lies to comfort myself.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
A runaway couldn’t be anything more than a runaway. I could never escape from the stigma I branded on myself.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
The shame I felt from things that were out of my hand… It’s inescapable, even for me.
Servant Roland
I don’t attribute the suffering of some strangers to myself.
Servant Roland
That’s that… and this is this…
Servant Roland
Some things just can’t be helped.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Sure. Let’s say that they were.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
And there’ll be still more things that are inevitable in the future.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Maybe we can’t change the things that are considered normal right away.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Even then, we’ll know shame at the very least.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Simply knowing shame in this society we’re part of will change a lot of things.
Servant Roland
…Just by knowing? There’s no strength to get things done.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Roland. The fact that one knows is sufficient.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
It might get shelved deep in the back of the mind because life keeps you busy.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
But, it can always be pulled back into the light. As long as you have the will.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
And when you bring it back up… it doesn’t have to be only one time. If you can do it time and time again…
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
Neither you, nor this City… No one could look down on the power it can create.
Servant Roland
Shame, huh… The humiliation that I took part in perpetuating the pain of the City…
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
That’s what I think, anyway.
Servant Roland
I get what you’re trying to say. I admit it.
Servant Roland
Yeah… It’s certainly true. Most aren’t even aware of what they’re doing.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
You really understand me~? I’m touched.
Servant Roland
…Thanks for the coffee.
Patron Librarian - Soc. Sciences Chesed
You’re always welcome~
Trivia
- The lines recited by Roland at the start of the episode are the third stanza of the poem "Prière pour aimer la douleur" by Francis Jammes, using a translation by Chi-young Kim for The Investigation by J.M. Lee. The usage of this poem continues through the story, in episodes where Roland's past is relevant.
