Kalo
“ | Tell the zealots of the Index remaining in L Corp’s territory this: Once we’ve sorted out this matter, we shall pull out their teeth and tongues, and feed them to the hounds as punishment for insulting The Thumb. | ” |
–Kalo |
Kalo is a Sottocapo of The Thumb. He is first introduced once the Library reaches the Urban Legend rank, his appearance and name are kept hidden from the player (but his portrait can be viewed through the convo log).
Appearance
Kalo is a middle aged man with grey hair and shaved beard, he has multiple scars on his face and a prosthetic mechanical right hand. He wears a black suit on top of his red Thumb Coat hanging from his shoulders. Kalo also holds a cane, although, he seems to only do so for style rather than needing the aid of the tool to walk.
Personality
While Kalo seems stoic in attitude, he is very strict and brutal, willing to harm his own subordinates as punishment for trivial mistakes through the mutilation of a body part. Kalo deeply values attitude and hierarchy, believing anyone with a position below him has no right to speak to him unless he requests them to do so, but through such belief, he will also follow every order given by his superiors without a second thought. He will also grant a more severe punishment to those who question his superiors' actions.
Story
Kalo is one of the highest-ranking members of The Thumb, having the position of Sottocapo which serves as an underboss of the syndicate, second only to the Capo dei capi. He's been serving the Thumb for an indefinite amount of time. He is shown having interest in taking the territory L Corp's Nest after its collapse and would rather not have the other Five Fingers getting in his way.
In a summit organized by the Thumb, he invites all of the nineteen Thumb subsidiaries and his own subordinates to review the actions regarding the occupation L-Corp's nest, however, he's informed the members of the Rumanos Cartel are absent from the meeting because they're are still recovering from The Black Silence's assault in their group, as a response, he excommunicates the Rumanos Cartel. Now with the summit in motion, Kalo begins by informing all the other Syndicate members to pull out of the L Corp's Nest and leave the occupation of the area for the Thumb only as a result of another party entering the conflict, making the situation even more difficult and unexpected. Various Thumb subsidiaries express their disapproval to such order but are quickly silenced by the subordinates of the Thumb. Kalo then explains the command was given by the Capo dei capi, the main leader of The Thumb's syndicate, and as such, he must follow them thoroughly even if it was within his desire to offer all other Thumb subsidiaries an equal amount of the Nest's land. The Leader of the Night Awls questions why the Capo dei capi has given such order, irritated at gesture of someone questioning his leader, Kalo orders the execution of every member of the Night Awls. Kalo soon reveals he was told personally by the Capo dei capi that the other Thumb subsidiaries don't have the strength to fight against the Index's Proxies, hence the order was given for them to retreat from the collapsed Nest for the time being. Once all other members acknowledge his orders, the meeting ends.
After an indefinite amount of time goes by after the summit, Kalo has a meeting with his subordinates, Katriel, Boris and Denis to discuss the current situation in the L Corp's Nest. Kalo talks about that too many different groups are involved in the fight for the Nest, such as the Index, Liu, R Corp and recently, The Blue Reverberation and Purple Tear. He comes to the conclusion to the conclusion that The Library is attracting them to the area. Boris suggests that whoever takes over the Library gains control of the Nest, then Katriel explains the Thumb has attempted to obtain the invitation to the Library, but was unsuccessful at acquiring an invite because it would suddenly disappear as soon as the Thumb could hold grasp of it. However, Kalo reveals an invitation has come across him, offering the books of the Liu Association which the information inside would give them a great advantage in taking over the Nest. Before the group can continue their conversation, a messenger of the Index, Yan, suddenly appears in the meeting room, stating that perhaps it is not such a good idea for the Underboss of the Thumb to venture into the Library. Yan asks permission to speak with Kalo, which, once he's granted, he explains that he doesn't agree in the that Kalo should go after the Library, because if a Thumb Underboss is turned into a book, the Index could obtain information from him and they could potentially seize the Thumb with ease. Kalo ignores Yan's warnings and instead orders the torture and execution of every Index member remaining in the L Corp's Nest for irritating him, starting with Yan. The Index Messenger is last seen attempting to escape from the Thumb whereabouts.
Some time later, Kalo and his group make their way to the Library's entrance. Katriel expresses her concern over Kalo's safety which he responds that she should look after herself instead. Angela greets the group soon after and Katriel comments about the rumors of the Library Director's being a machine, but Katriel herself is not fully able to grasp if Angela was indeed a human or a machine. Angela is irritated by Katriel's remark and Kalo warns Katriel that since the Library is a Star of the City, Angela has a higher position than even a underboss of the Thumb like himself. Katriel quickly realizes her mistake and apologizes to Angela, requesting Denis to cut off her tongue as punishment. Kalo apologizes on Katriel's behalf and Angela makes a final comment on how the group's view of hierarchy and punishment have a deranged approach.
Kalo and his subordinates are defeated in the Library and he turns into The Book of Kalo which contains his Key Page.
